Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the smile aesthetics methods preferred by our patients who have stains on the surface of their teeth or whose tooth color has darkened over time. Within the scope of İzmir teeth whitening applications, we clean all the residues and deposits on the surface of our patients’ teeth, allowing the teeth to whiten with laser treatment. For teeth whitening procedures, patients must undergo a medical examination by our dentists, and the application should be carried out according to the plans determined by them. Using different teeth whitening methods, we remove stains and deposits on the surface of our patients’ teeth. With teeth whitening, one of the smile aesthetic techniques applied upon our patients’ requests, we ensure that our patients’ teeth become white and radiant. For detailed information about our teeth whitening applications, performed under the supervision of our expert dentists and technicians, you can review the topics covered in this article.

Why is Teeth Whitening Important, and Why Is It Needed?

Teeth whitening is effective for individuals with discoloration and staining on their teeth, helping them remove such stains. After the teeth whitening procedure, permanent stains and marks on the tooth surface will be eliminated. Teeth whitening applications, performed using lasers and other methods, help whiten the teeth and provide a bright appearance for a certain period. Our teeth whitening applications, which eliminate the rough and dirty appearance of teeth, are carried out by our dentists according to our patients’ requests.

What Are the Types of Teeth Whitening Applications?

The types of teeth whitening applications vary depending on the requests and dental structure of our patients. The methods we use for teeth whitening are as follows:

Teeth whitening applications are evaluated in two categories based on the technique used:

  1. Power Bleaching: This is performed in a clinical setting and lasts approximately 1 hour. After the power bleaching process, our patients’ teeth color will lighten by 3-4 shades. A whitening gel is applied to the teeth and activated with light. Following the light application, the teeth will have a whiter and shinier appearance.

  2. Home Bleaching: In this method, after taking measurements of our patients’ teeth, we prepare custom-fit plastic mouth trays. These trays are filled with gel and applied to the teeth. After an average of 5 to 7 days, the home bleaching treatment will produce results, making the teeth appear whiter. The trays should be worn for about 4-8 hours daily, depending on the degree of discoloration.

Other techniques we use for teeth whitening include:

  • Home-based whitening
  • Office-based whitening
  • Single-tooth whitening for teeth treated with root canals
  • Combined whitening treatments at home and in the clinic
  • Clinic-based combined whitening treatments

Before choosing among the listed procedures, we listen to our patients’ requests and preferences and plan the teeth whitening treatment accordingly.

Is Teeth Whitening Suitable for Everyone?

There are certain criteria that individuals wishing to undergo teeth whitening must meet. The general conditions we look for in patients are as follows:

  • Patients must not have gum, dental, or oral diseases.
  • If patients have gum inflammation, gum treatment must be completed before starting the teeth whitening process.
  • Once the dental and gum treatments are completed and the oral health issues are resolved, teeth whitening can be performed.
  • Patients must be over 18 years old, as teeth whitening is not suitable for those whose bone development is incomplete. In exceptional cases, teeth whitening can be done with the approval of our dentists.
  • Patients must maintain good oral hygiene, as those who neglect oral care may not benefit from teeth whitening.

As long as the patient has good oral health, they can undergo teeth whitening. For patients with root canal treatments, tooth decay, or gum inflammation, whitening will be performed after the necessary treatments.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Microscopic studies have confirmed that teeth whitening does not harm the teeth and is 100% safe. After the whitening process, there will be no permanent damage or genetic alterations to the teeth. Our teeth whitening applications, which can be safely used by our patients, are offered with various concentrations and techniques. However, teeth sensitivity may occur after whitening, typically lasting between 24 to 48 hours, particularly when exposed to hot or cold. If sensitivity persists beyond this period, patients should consult their dentist and stop using the whitening product. Fluoride and special toothpaste recommended by our dentists can alleviate tooth sensitivity. The whitening effect lasts between 6 months and 2 years, but lifestyle habits such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and drinking caffeinated beverages can cause staining and reduce the duration of whiteness.
